We are now in the second half of the qualifying schedule and USA still topping the 2022 CONCACAF World Cup qualifying rankings. It follows it 2-0 win over Mexico in Ohio with a 1-1 draw in Jamaica, giving them a 15-point lead. But there are still other matches that will take place on the 8th of the 14th.
One of Mexico (Monday, 14 points) or Canada (3rd, 13 points) can overtake the US in the standings after their head-to-head match in Edmonton. Panama (4, 11 points) also hopes to continue chasing behind the CONCACAF powers when it meets El Salvador.
The other half of the table is in a precarious position. A group of three teams – Jamaica (day 5), Costa Rica (Friday), El Salvador (Saturday) – currently 4-5 points behind Panama for fourth place, winning a spot in the intercontinental play-in series for one of the final spots at the World Cup. Jamaica needs to start winning its home games, and the draw against the US doesn’t help its cause. Costa Rica hosts the last place Honduras in a must-win game for Ticos.
The first place leaders are (1) goal difference, (2) number of goals scored and (3) the most points obtained from matches between the teams drawn. The full list of draw players and results for Matches 1-7 to follow is at the bottom of this post.
Eight countries from the CONCACAF region (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) are competing for three automatic spots to the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the final “octagon” qualifier.
The eight nations will face off in a one-round round-robin format with each team playing against the other seven opponents once at home and once in the top lane. A total of 14 matches for each national team starts in September 2021 and will end in March 2022.
The top three finishers automatically go to Qatar, while the fourth-placed team enters the intercontinental playoffs with the final ticket to Qatar. Here is the standings for the teams even by points:
