Congenital abnormalities more likely to occur in neonates exposed to opioids

Prescribed opioid pain relievers can cross the placenta and potentially cause harm, and about 2%-4% of fetuses are exposed to these drugs.

2% (11903) of neonates were exposed in utero to opioid analgesics, such as codeine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, tramadol, and morphine.

The study showed an increased, although low, risk of major anomalies with exposure to tramadol and morphine, and minor anomalies with exposure to codeine, hydromorphone, and oxycodone. Specific congenital malformations observed included gastrointestinal and genitourinary anomalies, cancers and tumors, and ankylosing spondylitis.

This large study adds to previous evidence from studies done in Sweden and Norway and from a recent study of pregnant US Medicaid beneficiaries showing an increased risk of birth defects. small increments, an important finding for a pregnant woman who may be prescribed opioids for pain relief.

Dr Susan Brogly, an epidemiologist and associate professor at Queen’s University, Kingston, writes: “Both the potential for harm or distress to the pregnant woman due to previous treatment and subsequent risks to the infant. birth must be considered for effective treatment. Ontario, with co-authors.

“These findings further identify harm associated with prenatal exposure to opioid analgesics to inform treatment options for pain in pregnancy.”
