Jonquel Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Connecticut Sun overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth inning, beat the Chicago Sky 72-63 on Thursday night in the decisive fifth game of the semi-final series and advanced into WNBA Finals.
Connecticut scored the last 18 of the game to overcome a 63-54 deficit with a remaining score of 4:46.
The Sun’s starters all scored with double points, and Connecticut advanced to the Finals for the third time overall and for the first time since 2019.
Connecticut will face the top-seeded Las Vegas Aces for the WNBA title. The first game of the series was Sunday in Las Vegas.
Chicago managed to become the first team to repeat the WNBA championship since the Los Angeles Sparks in 2001-02.
Jones scored inside to give Sun the lead with two minutes left, taking the next free-throw to take a three-point lead.
Natisha Hiedeman ended the game with a forward 2:24 left as Connecticut cut the deficit in the fourth inning.
A Courtney Williams diver with 47.5 seconds remaining gave Sun a five-point cushion, and DeWanna Bonner knocked down four free throws to send the game out of reach.
Connecticut overcame Chicago 25-5 in the fourth quarter, recovering from a disastrous third period in which they scored eight points and tackled more than seven times.
Kahleah Copper leads Sky with 22 points when shooting 8 to 19, including 3/5 from long range, and 4 more steals.
DeWanna Bonner added 15 points, Hiedeman added 14 and Williams and Alyssa Thomas each added 12 for Connecticut.
Emma Meesseman, who finished with 14 points in a 6-to-14 shoot and six rebounds, gives Sky an 11-point lead with 7:20 to play.
In the opening half, The Sun continued the torrential fire they had in Game 4, when they completed 56.9% of their shots. But that slowed in the third quarter, as Sky’s defense tightened.
Candace Parker buried 3 points and Copper was next to play 3 points to give Chicago a 10 point lead into the fourth game.
But Chicago’s photo shoot went cold and Sky missed their last eight shots.
Parker finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
