Conservative leader: Peter MacKay ruled out for the 2nd time

TORONTO – Peter MacKay announced on social media Saturday night that he will not be making another bid for leadership of the Conservative Party.

“I know that it takes a tremendous commitment to meet the demands of leadership, and I admire those who are willing to go forth and serve our country in that way,” he said in a post. posted on Facebook.

MacKay cited his desire to be with his family, as well as the massive campaign debt accumulated from his unsuccessful campaign to become Conservative Party leader in 2020.

“I continue to pay off my campaign debt from the 2020 leadership campaign, due to unforeseen circumstances. In addition, I am grateful to those who have continued to help me carry out that mission and endeavour. write off that debt,” MacKay said.

MacKay held many cabinet positions during Stephen Harper’s time as Prime Minister, including Attorney General, Defense Secretary and Foreign Secretary, and served as a Nova Scotia MP until 2015.

Prior to that, he was the leader of the now defunct Progressive Conservative Party of Canada until the party merged with Harper’s Alliance of Canada and formed the Conservative Party of Canada.

Four candidates are currently in the race to replace former leader Erin O’Toole, including Ottawa regional MP Pierre Poilievre and former Quebec Premier Jean Charest.

Rookie MP and past leadership candidate Leslyn Lewis also launched another campaign for the party’s top job, as did Ontario independent MP Roman Baber. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown is also expected to launch his campaign on Sunday.
