While the Switch proved to be a huge hit in the heavily disrupted 2020 year, production and distribution challenges meant that sales were left behind. Looks like 2021, with some supply improvements, is another strong sales year for Nintendo; Now there are Japanese sales figures to back that up.

In the data collected by Famitsu and shared with GamesIndustry.biz, Switch is comfortably the best-selling console in Japan in 2021 – this is a calendar not a financial year, so the data is from December 28, 2020 to December 19, 2021. During that time, the Switch sold about 5.3 million units at retail in Japan, up from 5.1 million the year before – numbers largely flat due to the difference in dates.

Below is a breakdown of broader hardware sales, showing that Nintendo’s system outsells all other platforms combined.

  1. Nintendo Switch – 5.3 million units
  2. PlayStation 5 – 942,798 units
  3. PlayStation 4 – 103,786 units
  4. Xbox Series X | S – 95,598
  5. Nintendo 3DS – 28,224

Nintendo’s overall estimate of current global sales finance lower than 2020/21, but the target is still an impressive 24 million units.
