County of St. Louis to consider increasing rates for inmates
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – St. Louis will consider a request to quadruple fines for city inmates.
As of now, judicial services are currently contracting with 50 cities to hold city inmates in prisons for a fee of $30 per day. They are now asking to increase the rate to $120 per day. This rate has never increased since the prison opened more than 20 years ago.
The department hired KPMG, an audit, tax and consulting service to study the costs. The study compared other Missouri counties of similar size. Both counties of St. Charles and Jefferson both cost close to $120 per day. The director of Judicial Services also said the increase would help address staffing challenges and the high cost of overtime.
The director was asked to attend Tuesday’s meeting to answer questions about this request.
