COVID-19 death: Canada passes grim milestone

Canada has passed a grim milestone, recording its 30,000th COVID-19 death since the pandemic broke out in early 2020.

Ontario reported nine more deaths from the virus on Thursday, pushing the total number of Canadians to more than 30,000 as experts warn of new threats posed by the more transmissible variant of Omicron.

Canada hit 10,000 COVID-19 deaths last November and surpassed 20,000 deaths two months later in January 2021 – a leap that came before enough vaccines were available to have an impact.

Since then, experts say, the vaccine has dramatically curbed the daily number of deaths from the virus, with some estimates suggesting that the number of deaths in each age group is 75% to 90% less. compared to the normal level.

Canada’s director of public health Dr Theresa Tam said the arrival of a vaccine a year ago had resulted in a “significant shift” in Canada’s COVID-19 trajectory, with mortality specific reduction.

Tam said the mortality rate continues to be lower but warned of increased infection rates due to the more transmissible variant of Omicron.
