The deadline for all employees at St. The fully immunized Joseph’s Health Care London has come and gone, with the hospital laying off 40 non-compliant staff.
In October, the organization announced a COVID-19 vaccination policy that requires all workers to be fully vaccinated by November 30 or present a medical waiver.
The organization says nearly all staff have been vaccinated, with 100% of doctors and more than 99% of staff vaccinated.
“The past 20 months have been extremely difficult, and especially difficult for the healthcare sector and those in the healthcare sector. Our staff has done an incredible job over the past 20 months. Roy Butler, president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph’s Health Care London, has ramped up care delivery to our community during these times of fear and anxiety.
Butler said while they’re grateful to the staff for their support during the pandemic, he stressed the need to get vaccinated to keep everyone safe.

Of the 40 employees laid off, Butler said 19 provided direct care and 21 provided supportive care or worked in administrative areas.
Butler said, none of those terminated will receive severance pay.
Of all the employees, one doctor met the requirements for a medical exemption, while the other 40 did not and are being terminated.
COVID-19 – LHSC lays off 84 employees after vaccine policy expires
In anticipation of possible employee loss, Butler noted that it has been working to hire more people to fill any vacancies over the past few months.
“We know (vaccine) is the most effective strategy against this virus, so we need to continue with our mandatory vaccination policy.”
St. Joseph’s is not the first healthcare organization to implement a vaccine policy, with the London Health Science Center doing the same.
In the case of LHSC, 84 employees were laid off after failing to meet the October 22 COVID-19 vaccine deadline.
The 84 employees represent less than 1% of the 9,148 LHSC employees.
