NEW DELHI: MaharashtraFollowed by Manipur and Uttar Pradeshrecorded the highest number of deaths from Covid-19 in 2020, when 1.6 thousand people could not cope with this virus in the country.
In 2020, the total number of registered deaths of the country is 81.15,882 of which 18,11,688 deaths are medically certified.
According to the ‘Report on medical certification of causes of death 2020’, the highest deaths (29.4%) due to Covid-19 were reported for the age group of 70 and older, followed by 55- 64 years old (23.9%) .
As recommended by the Indian Council of Medical Research, the code refers to recorded Covid-19 deaths as a separate primary cause group for the first time.
The deaths reported from Covid-19 contributed 8.9% of the total number of medically certified deaths.
There are 1,60,618 deaths from Covid-19 in 2020, of which 1,14,217 are men and 46,401 are women.
According to the number of medically certified deaths registered in 2020, Maharashtra recorded the highest percentage of medically certified Covid deaths with 17.7%, followed by Manipur (15) .7%), Uttar Pradesh (15.0%), Himachal Pradesh (13.5%), Uttarakhand (12.8%), Andhra Pradesh (12.0%), Punjab (11.9%) and Delhi (10.8%).
The report does not provide actual Covid-19 death tolls, states and Union Territories.
No medically certified Covid-19 deaths have been registered in Arunachal Pradesh and Lakshadweep during 2020.
According to the Union Health Ministry, as of Thursday, a total of 5,24,525 Covid deaths have been reported so far in the country, including 1,47,857 from Maharashtra, 69,643 from Kerala, 40,106 from Karnataka38,025 from Tamil Nadu, 26,207 from Delhi, 23,519 from Uttar Pradesh and 21,203 from West Bengal.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that more than 70% of deaths are due to comorbidities.
As shown in the RGI data, the highest deaths (29.4%) were reported for the age group 70 and older, followed by 55-64 years (23.9%).
The age group 65-69, with a gap between classes of only 5 years, also had a significant number of deaths (14.5%).
The mortality rates for women aged 34 and under as well as those aged 55-64 and 65-69 years of age in total female deaths were higher than the corresponding male rates.
So far, there have been 4,31,44,820 people infected with Coronavirus in India.
