COVID-19 Update: BC reports 970 cases, 11 deaths in 72 hours

Vancouver –

British Columbia recorded another 970 cases of COVID-19 and 11 related deaths over the weekend, as the province’s seven-day average of infections continued to decline.

The latest number released by the Health Department on Monday pushed the weekly average to 304 cases per day, the lowest level since 8/8.

BC’s active case count also fell to 2,827, marking the first time it fell below 3,000 in three months.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 infected patients increased slightly to 303, while the number of actively treated patients remained at 115.

The update comes as BC begins immunizing children between the ages of 5 and 11 against COVID-19. While some parents worry about vaccinating their children, officials note that about three million children in the U.S. have received the same vaccine developed with their minds in mind, and as a result. there is no “safety signal”.

Just over 91% of British Columbians 12 years of age and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and nearly 89% have received two.

Children under 12 have accounted for about 20% of BC’s recent COVID-19 cases, despite making up about 10% of the population.

The push to vaccinate is also becoming more urgent as countries prepare for the potential impact of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant. Experts have warned that this variant has an unusually high number of mutations, although their impact on transmissibility, disease severity and vaccine resistance is yet to be determined. .

This is a developing story and will be updated.
