COVID-19 virus can infect male genital organs

According to the team, the study indicates that symptoms such as erectile dysfunction reported by some COVID patients may be directly caused by the virus, not by the inflammation or fever that often accompanies the disease.

The team examined the monkeys with a full-body scan specifically designed to detect sites of infection, the report said.

“The signal that came to us was purely male genital transmission” Thomas Hope, Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, was quoted as saying.

“We didn’t know we’d find it there,” he added.

Although the study was only based on findings in three monkeys, the findings are consistent, Hope said.

The team did not know if the monkeys had symptoms that corresponded to a viral infection in the male genital tract, such as low testosterone levels, low sperm counts, pain or sexual dysfunction, Hope said.

Researchers from the University of Miami, last year, first to demonstrate that COVID-19 can persist in penile tissue long after men recover from the disease and lead to erectile dysfunction.

The team writes in the World Journal of Men’s Health that COVID-19 infection can cause widespread vascular dysfunction, or endothelial dysfunction, which may then contribute to the disorder. Erectile.

Since then, various studies have reported that about 10 to 20 percent of men infected with coronavirus have symptoms related to male genital tract dysfunction.

What’s more, men infected with the virus were three to six times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction than others, thought to be a sign of so-called long-term COVID, the NYT report said.

Hope notes that other viruses also affect fertility. “Mumps is most famous in history for causing infertility,” he say. “The Zika virus goes to the testicles and infects the testicles, and Ebola can do that too.”

He recommends men get vaccinated and get medical check-ups if they are concerned about their sexual or reproductive health, the report said.
