Ravindra Jadeja had a memorable opening match as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Under him, the defending champions lost six of their first eight matches. That bad start led to MS Dhoni took over the four-time IPL award-winning captain’s armband. Since Dhoni took over, CSK has won the last 2/3 matches. However, a playoff spot looks tough at this point.
Talking about the captaincy failures of Jadeja, the former head coach of the Indian cricket team Ravi Shastri said that giving the captain’s armband to Jadeja made it difficult for the surrounding players.
“He’s not a born captain. He’s never been a captain at any level. So to give him responsibility, I think it’s a bit difficult for Jadeja,” Shastri told ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out.
“People might want to judge Jaddu, but it’s not his fault. He doesn’t captain anywhere. He looks like a fish on the water, completely out of place and he’s better. a lot when playing as a player because he’s one of the best around in the business, when it comes to people around.

“So let him just focus on his cricket. That (the decision to give him the captaincy) cost CSK a few games early. If you see their form now, If they have this soon, they’ll be right up there in the mix.”
Regarding the picks that CSK could go as Dhoni’s successor, Shastri said: “Then who could be the pick? Just like Faf du Plessis for RCB,” Shastri said, suggesting that the Super Kings wait until the auction if needed. In combination, if you think Ruturaj has, or Moeen or even a local player, if there’s someone you think is capable of leading a faction, go ahead and give it a shot.”
