Dallas ISD basketball player arrested in San Antonio after gunfire on team bus – CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas ISD’s Kimball High School is once again racing for the boys’ state basketball title, but they must compete without Kyron Henderson on Thursday night, March 10.

The 18-year-old was arrested in San Antonio after a gun was fired on a team bus and lodged in the leg of a team coach.

ISD Dallas CEO Michael Hinojosa said during a morning briefing with reporters. “This is a sad day for ISD Dallas, insurmountable.”

According to San Antonio police and county officials, weapons were fired as the team was leaving the ISD facility in Northside, where the team was practicing, and as they prepared to go out to dinner Wednesday night.

A female coach was hit in the leg, had surgery, and returned with her family to Dallas. School district officials say the student is expected to be fine. However, the incident is another blow to a community that is working so hard to polish its image.

Hinojosa explains: “This is extremely disappointing, and it is personal because I used to be a coach,” I am a teacher in Dallas, we have improved a lot and we showed it. cabin about Oak Cliff. I always say: you are only as good as your reputation. You can do a lot of good and build on it, and one bad thing can drag you down. ”

The director, known for being proud of his Oak Cliff roots, was clearly frustrated by the situation. But others who knew the athlete told CBS 11 they were disappointed, but not surprised.

Lamoyne Brown, a private track and field coach in Dallas, said: “For a kid like this who’s been in trouble and has been through a number of things, you hope that he gets through, to get through. across the crossroads of life.

Henderson is facing multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm on school property. He was kicked out of the team.

“He could go pro within a year,” says Jill Harper, who lives in the area, sadly. ”

“He’s one of those guys you hope to make this list,” says Brown, because he’s such a talent in two sports. Just hope he gets a chance to do it. After hearing this, you never know what will happen.”

Brown says he has no doubt that Henderson will choose his college. Now he just hopes the situation is a wake-up call for other teens. “The simple fact is, it’s not just him,” Brown said.

“Like I said, we can’t get rid of the things that we deal with ourselves,” says Hinojosa. “We have to find a way to turn this around.”

The remaining teams advance to the semi-final second leg on Thursday night.

They lost to Beaumont United with a score of 66-64.
