Dan Fogelman Hopes All “Will Be Answered” – The Hollywood Reporter

During his six-season tenure, This is us has become known for its unexpected twists and turns. As the series draws to a close, host Dan Fogelman and the cast confirm that there are still more surprises to come.

On Tuesday night, the cast and crew gathered at Paramount Studios in Hollywood to celebrate the show’s sixth and final season, which premieres January 4 on NBC.

“I think at the end of the season, every fan will walk away feeling like they’ve had a full meal and a dessert,” said season six star and director Jon Huertas, who plays Miguel, speak The Hollywood Reporter. “The writers are taking care and getting us there in a way that is very smart, emotional, and sometimes scary, so I think the fans will be very pleased with all sorts of other emotions. each other they feel during the Season. They won’t feel like they’ve missed out on anything. ”

Sterling K. Brown, who plays as one of the Big Three, Randall Pearson, added for the upcoming season, “I think you can expect more than you’ve had in the last six years, right? That includes surprises, because Fogelman likes a good surprise. ”

He continued: “I never cease to be amazed at the six-year consistency of a network TV show, keeping the bar high. And I’m not saying that because I’m on the show. Because I had the opportunity to read a lot of things, and a lot of things you have read, and [This Is Us] always really, really good. “

Brown – perennial Game of Thrones fans – previously went public about his displeasure with the HBO show’s finale. But the actor insists that the ending of This is us won’t do that.

“I’m not trying to hate, you have to understand this, but I’ve spent 10 years of my life watching Game of Thrones. And you know in times of pandemic and what’s not, I can go back and see UNDERSTAND. But I know how it ended, and it’s not the same,” he explained. “I don’t think we will have the same problem [on this show]. I think there will be many years from now people will be like, ‘I just discovered this show and it’s so adorable. And it finished perfectly. ‘”

Regarding Randall’s character’s journey in the final season, Brown joked that he “could tell you, but then [he’d] must kill you. When it comes to keeping secrets, Brown says he’s used to it. “I did Black Panther, “I said. “So it was like, [Marvel] Will kill you. And I don’t want that. We have been together for the above six years [This Is Us], and I don’t want to mess it up now”.

For Milo Ventimiglia, who plays Pearson’s late patriarch, keeping the show running well hasn’t been too difficult for the actor.

“You don’t want to ruin the experience because [fans],” Ventimiglia explains. “I think that’s what Dan inspired for all of us to be ‘hey, don’t spoil the experience for the audience. Let’s really make sure we’re giving people the real experience when they see it for the first time. ‘”

Despite the tight secrets kept on set, star Mandy Moore – who also directed an episode this season – says she’s not entirely in the dark about the show’s trajectory.

“I feel like we all know what we need to know, so I feel like I have enough information to keep moving forward,” said Moore, whose character Rebecca Pearson was diagnosed with the disease. Alzheimer, said. “I don’t feel like I’m in the dark about anything.”

But in the early days of the series, the host was much more strict about secrecy.

“When this show really went viral in a way that we weren’t prepared for the first and second seasons, I stopped allowing even the studio network [the scripts], in addition to some core people who read them and watched the show,” said Fogelman CHEAP. “I was so scared that someone would come into our office and see how Jack was [Ventimiglia] died. You know, that’s a particularly big thing. We loosened those rules a bit because we don’t have that level of secrecy [anymore.]”

At the end of the show’s last season, audiences were shocked to find that Toby (played by Chris Sullivan) and Kate (played by Chrissy Metz) were moving toward a divorce. But Sullivan wasn’t surprised at all.

“Someone on this show is going to have to get a divorce,” the actor said. “It won’t be Beth [Susan Kelechi Watson] and Randall [Brown]. That doesn’t leave much. And that’s an important part of relationships to discover, and no one does it better than Dan Fogelman and our writers. ”

He continued: “I think some people fit together forever. Some people develop in the same direction, others develop in different directions, and that too should be destined. Life has seasons and the end of this show will be the end of a season for Kate and Toby.”

The cast also underscores the bittersweet nature of the final season’s celebration as they prepare to step out on a six-year journey together.

“I think the fans of the show are saying goodbye, Rebecca is also saying goodbye in a way, and that makes me emotional just thinking about her character. “We are all grieving the loss of this family and this experience we all had together over the past six years. [Fans] also saying goodbye to the Pearsons. We are on these parallel journeys. “

Fogelman added, “When we get to the end of this issue, I don’t think there will be anything left for you who have been asking for six years continuously about vandals to ask for more. I hope everything is resolved. ”

As for the emotions on set, the host knew it was going to be a tough goodbye for all. “We’re on home stretch mode and you start to get that feeling in your throat,” he says. “It will be a mess. It will be a hot mess. I think there will be more water works on our set than there are people watching, to be honest. ”
