Danielle Macdonald was enthralled reading the script for Tourists for the first time that she didn’t even care if she got the job or not. You just need to know how it ends. “I can’t remember the last time I got excited about a script,” she told me over Zoom. “I can’t put it down.” I myself just finished the show, I understood her mind. From the genius minds of Harry and Jack Williams — the duo behind horror movies like Missing person and Baptiste–Tourists is an exciting cat and mouse chase that doesn’t last until its shocking revelation finally comes to light.
Of course, Macdonald ended up getting the job — and the plot twist she was looking for. “I literally cried when I got the role,” she says from her Los Angeles home surrounded by her rescue animals. “I didn’t cry when I got a role in a long time, but I just said, ‘Ah, it feels great because I’m so excited about this. The six-part curvy genre series follows an Irishman (Jamie Dornan) who loses his memory after a horrific car crash and must embark on a deadly journey in the Australian outback to find reveal his true identity. Along the way, he’s joined by a host of unusual characters, including the lovable Helen Chambers, played by Macdonald. The perfect actress plays the somewhat awkward but likable intern, who is always on the lookout for self-discovery while entangled in the mysterious man’s problems. She’s the heart of the show, someone you can’t stop supporting.
