Davis Cup Qualifiers: Cameron Norrie Help Inspire UK to Hardline Victory in Colombia | Tennis news

Cameron Norrie secured Great Britain’s place in the group stage of this year’s Davis Cup with victory in his second singles match of their qualifying round in Colombia.

British No 1 Norrie endured a tense encounter with Nicolas Mejia in Bogota 6-4 6-4 on Saturday to give Leon Smith’s side an unbelievable 3-1 lead.

His success came after Dan Evans and Neal Skupski beat Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in a doubles match earlier in the day to give the visitors the lead for the first time in a draw.

Mejia, world number 253, caused a big shock on Friday by beating Evans in the opening set before Norrie equalized with a win over Nicolas Barrientos.

Norrie beat Mejia in just over two hours in his second match.

All England group stage matches will be played at home, at an unspecified location.

A busy weekend of relations saw 24 countries compete with 12 winners alongside 2022 champions Canada, runners-up Australia and representatives Spain and Italy.

Switzerland, the United States, Sweden, Serbia and France were among the early winners to qualify.
