Davis Cup: Russia beat Croatia to end a 15-year drought
MADRID –
Russia’s 15-year wait for a Davis Cup title ended on Sunday after another clutch performance by Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev beat Marin Cilic 7-6 (7), 6-2 in the second singles match to give Russia a 2-0 lead over Croatia in the final. This is Russia’s third Davis Cup title, and the first since 2006.
Andrey Rublev had previously beaten Borna Gojo in consecutive sets to give the Russians the lead at Madrid Arena.
Russia’s other Davis Cup title came in 2002. Croatia is also looking for a third title after winning it in 2005 and 2018.
