Davis Cup: USA enters the group stage

The United States made it through to the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals on Saturday, winning a 4-0 win over Uzbekistan from Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek’s doubles team.

They beat Sergey Fomin and Sanjar Fayziev 6-2, 6-4, after Tommy Paul and Mackenzie McDonald won Friday’s singles games in Tashkent.

Ram finished 3rd in the ATP Tour men’s doubles rankings and teamed up with Joe Salisbury to win the last two US Open men’s doubles titles. But the Americans chose not to use the Ram last year in the final round, when they lost the doubles in a 1-2 loss to Italy in the quarterfinals.

Krajicek made his Davis Cup debut, reaching ninth in the doubles rankings late last year.

“They had a great five days of preparation, and as expected, they played really sharp and broke early in the first set. And then it’s like two freight trains, nothing can stop them,” said interim captain David Nainkin.

Denis Kudla then beat Amir Milushev 6-4, 6-4.

The winners of the 12 qualifiers held this weekend – six on Friday-Saturday, six on Saturday-Sunday – advance to the Davis Cup Finals group stage in September, along with the defending champions. Canada, runner-up Australia 2022 and recipients of Italy and Spain representative cards.

Eight teams will advance to the closing games of the Davis Cup Finals scheduled for November 21-26 in Malaga, Spain.

In Saturday’s other games:

France 3, Hungary 2: On the indoor hard court in Tatabanya, Hungary, Ugo Humbert helped France win 6-3, 6-3 over Fabian Marozsan. Adrian Mannarino was forced into the decisive match when he beat Marton Fucsovics 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Serbia 4, Norway 0: On indoor hard courts in Oslo, the visitors played without top player Novak Djokovic, ending the match as Filip Krajinovic and Nikola Cacic edged Viktor Durasovic and Herman Hoeyeraal 6-4 , 3-6, 6-3. Hamad Medjedovic then beat Durasovic 6-4, 6-7, 10-4.

Sweden 3, Bosnia 1: On the indoor hard court in Stockholm, Mikael Ymer put the home team through by beating Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
