EUGENE, Ore. –
The Canadian men’s 4×100 meter relay team is winning gold at the World Athletics Championships.
Six-time Olympic medalist Andre De Grasse took Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney’s team to victory on Saturday in a time of 37.48 seconds, the fastest in the world this season.
The gold medal is Canada’s third world championship medal.
The Americans won silver with 37.55, while the British came in third (37.83).
The win was a great end for De Grasse, who contracted COVID-19 a month ago, and failed to qualify for the 100-meter final. He also retreated from 200 meters.
It also comes after a number of near misses by the Canadian team. De Grasse led the Canadians to silver at the Tokyo Olympics last summer and bronze at Rio in 2016, plus bronze at the 2015 worlds in Beijing. Canada did not make it to the finals at the final world tournament in 2019 in Doha.
Led by Donovan Bailey, Canada won 4×100 gold at the 1995 and 1997 world championships. That team included Glenroy Gilbert, who is now the head coach of Athletics Canada.
