Deadly stampede at Basra stadium ahead of Gulf Cup final | Football News

A stampede outside a stadium in the southern Iraqi city of Basra left at least two people dead and dozens injured, hours before the final of the Arabian Gulf Cup began.

Thursday’s incident occurred as thousands of spectators gathered to watch the match between Iraq and Oman, which began at 7pm (16:00 GMT) at the Basra International Stadium.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry, in a statement, urged those without tickets to see the final to leave the stadium area. It says the place is full and all gates are closed.

New Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani called on the people to help the government “show the final battle of the [the] 25th edition of the Gulf Cup in its finest form”.

State media reported that giant screens had been placed at various public places in Basra so that people could watch the match.
