Debbie Allen, Jennifer Beals Missing ‘Honor’ Star – The Hollywood Reporter

Debbie Allen, Questlove, Jennifer Beals and Diane Warren are among a number of Hollywood celebrities to pay tribute to Irene Cara following the news of the Oscar-winning artist’s death at the age of 63.

Cara began her career as a child singer and dancer before striking with the 1980s musical film Reputation, in which she played Coco Hernandez and sang the theme song and “Out Here on My Own”, both of which were nominated for an Academy Award for Original Song. She is also known for her hit “Flashdance… What a Feeling” from the 1983 movie dance flashmod, which won her an Oscar and a Grammy. Other credits include the 1976 film twinklealong with a number of Broadway productions.

Among those paying tribute to the New York City native was NYC Mayor Eric Adams. “Irene Cara sang the song of New York City,” he tweeted Saturday. “Born in the Bronx, she reached for the stars and provided a soundtrack for all time. She will really let go. Rest in peace.”

Debbie Allen, who starred in the TV version of Reputation based on the series and ran for six seasons in the 1980s, tweeted“My heart is broken. #IreneCara is such a beautiful and talented genius. Her talent and music will LIVE FOREVER! EVERYONE REMEMBER HER NAME!”

Beals, who starred in dance flashmod. post. “There must be a beautiful dreamer who writes and performs the soundtrack for those who dare to dream.”

Also sharing condolences is Strange things star Matthew Modine, who post, “What a presence. What a voice. She defined a decade with her songs.
