Decommissioned Confederate Statues In Baltimore To Be Featured During The LA Show – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Mayor Brandon Scott’s office confirmed four Baltimore-owned Confederate monuments are heading for an exhibit at the Los Angeles museum.

The statues will travel across the country to “MONUMENTS”, a Exhibition of the non-profit organization LAXART art will open in Fall 2023. The performance is curated by LAXART Director Hamza Walker and artist Kara Walker, without any relation, and Museum of Contemporary Art Senior Curator, Bennett Simpson.

Monuments in Baltimore are the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Royal Avenue, the Confederate Women’s Monument from West Parkway University, the Roger B. Taney Monument from Mount Vernon Place and Robert E. Lee and Thomas . J. “Stonewall” Jackson monument from Wyman Park Dell.

The statues was taken down overnight in september 2017a few days later Baltimore City Council passed a solution call for the immediate dissolution of the statues.

The council’s unanimous vote came days after a “Right-wing Solidarity” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia that drew white nationalists and protesters turned violent. Unite the Right organizers say one of the reasons behind the event is the city’s plans to remove the Robert E. Lee monument from a park there.

One idea pitched in 2017 by then-Mayor Catherine Pugh was that monuments could go to Confederate cemeteries. It is unclear where the statues will go when the exhibition ends.
