NEW DELHI: Three members Appropriation Committee because the Jammu and Kashmir signed the final order on Thursday for the restructuring of the seats assembled in the Union territory, a day before its term ends, an EC spokesman said.
Demarcation committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai and having Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and State Election Commissioner J&K as full members, have held a series of meetings over the past few days to study and consider the proposals. and objections communicated to it by members of the public, civil. social and political representation at public hearings conducted in Jammu and Srinagar on 4 and 5 April.
A copy of this order and report, detailing the number of constituencies and their size, shall be submitted to the government, after which the order shall be issued through a notice in the gazette.
The committee has proposed to increase the number of seats in UT from 83 to 90. In addition, there are 24 seats in Pakistani-occupied Kashmir (PoK) that continue to be vacant.
For the first time, nine seats were proposed for the Scheduled Tribes.
The panel also recommended six additional seats for Jammu and one for Kashmir. Currently, the Kashmir division has 46 seats and the Jammu division has 37 seats.
Formed in March 2020, the panel was renewed for another year last year.
The panel is chaired by Election Commission Chief Sushil Chandra and the incumbent Jammu and Kashmir state election commissioner.
In February, it was again given a two-month extension to complete its mission. Otherwise, its term will end on March 6.
