Des Moines Public Works responds to first snow

The new year is off to a frosty start: the first storm of the season is finally here. Des Moines Public Works said crews of tractors were out last night working on all snow with salt spreaders. When the last storm hit today, the city sent out a full response: 100 devices and 100 people behind the wheel. The Des Moines Public Company said it will work the snow route continuously. Once the snow stops, they will clear the rest of the side streets across the Des Moines area. City officials say it’s important to follow safe winter driving tips, especially since it’s been months since anyone’s driven in the snow. “What is very unusual about this storm is that the very unusually cold temperatures have dropped in the single digits and will drop below zero in the hours overnight,” said Des Moines Public Works Director Jonathan Gano. At that point, salt is much less efficient.” Gano told the Iowans to “stay at home if you don’t need to go anywhere” and slow down when driving. Amanda Rooker of KCCI reports.
