Detroit police arrested 3 people, seized 12 cars for racing and drifting over the weekend
(WXYZ) – Police are announcing that street racing and drifting in the City of Detroit is not acceptable.
Police have been bullying street racers for the past few years, and that continues on Friday.
Three people were arrested and 12 cars confiscated following an incident near Woodmere and Vernor on Friday night.
The people in the vicinity were fed up. One woman said people are treating the park like a racetrack, constantly making donuts a parking lot, no matter who is around.
Tire tracks remain on the sidewalk near Nancy Quezada’s neighborhood in Southwest Detroit. She has lived there for three years now with small children, but the park down the street is forbidden.
“We don’t allow the kids to go to the park because it’s very dangerous,” said Quezada.
Instead, she created a jungle gym behind the gate so her kids could still play.
Joseph Zent said street racing has been a problem for many years now.
“(They) regularly run 70 mph down this street and it’s a residential street 25 mph,” he said.
In June 2021, Detroit Police announced it would take a firm stance against street racing and drift. In just one weekend last year, they sold out 62 tickets.
Police say street racing can lead to large gatherings, drinking and even drawing guns during arguments. That’s why the audience is in trouble too. Police checked 25 of them on Friday.
The DPD asks people to call 911 if they see this happening and if it is safe to do so, pull out your phone and record a video of a street racing. You can catch a license plate and help them investigate.
