Disney+ Heavy Sequel – The Hollywood Reporter

Twenty-nine years ago, the Sanderson sisters, a trio of abrasive siblings, captivated Disney audiences. Or at least they tried.

Kenny Ortega’s A trick It didn’t initially receive critical or even commercial acclaim, but over the years the entertaining quirky Halloween movie has garnered a huge following. My sisters and I came to the film many years after its release – a chance encounter while browsing the channels. We enjoy its strange, unusual tone. Since then, it has been our tradition to watch Winnie (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) chase young children through Salem, the Festival, on Halloween night.

Hocus Pocus 2, the much-anticipated sequel to Disney’s original film, honors its history without knowing how to overdo it. Directed by Anne Fletcher, the live-action comedy is marked by the struggle between embracing existing fans and courting new ones. Recycled plot points, memory jokes, and knowing winks to wider fans are included in the kind of sleek CGI package typical of Disney products today. The result is a slim but satisfying piece of entertainment.

The most interesting thing about Hocus Pocus 2 (besides its utility as a lesson in how you can’t bottle and resell nostalgia) is its star trio: Midler, Parker, and Najimy reprising their roles with the same overflowing dynamic energy. A trick love. You can tell they are having fun.

The film opens with a flashback. Winifred Sanderson (Taylor Henderson) has just turned 16, the age at which a young girl discovers she’s a witch and follows colonial patriarchy should get married. Winnie didn’t know about the first and was not happy about the second. We see her burst into the house where she lives with her older sisters, Sarah (Juju Journey Brener) and Mary (Nina Kitchen). There are parts of the trio’s mature personalities – Winnie’s bossy, Sarah’s docile personality, and Mary’s belligerent personality – that make this flashback feel more than just perfunctory.

Sarah and Mary try to comfort Winnie – the town’s revered man (Tony Hale) asks to marry someone other than her beloved Billy Butcherson (Austin J. Ryan) – with compliments and gifts . Before they could make any headway, they found themselves running away from Reverend Traske and the entire town of Salem. The sisters enter the depths of the forest, where an encounter with a witch reveals to them that they are also magical creatures. The importance of the Sanderson sisters’ origin story becomes more apparent later, but it’s hard not to glance at the film’s attempt to let the trilogy’s cruelty form the basis of a feminist argument. supposing Cruella did with its main character.

Fast-forward to the present day and the Sandersons, as we all know A trick, has not been seen for many years. It’s Halloween again. The story of their defeat at the hands of three children 29 years ago has been added to the town’s lore. Becca (Whitney Peak), Izzy (Belissa Escobedo) and Cassie (Lilia Buckingham) are struggling with their friendship as Cassie already has a boyfriend (Froy Gutierrez). Becca plans to throw a 16th birthday party without Cassie, who she accidentally discovers is having a Halloween party at the same time. Three friends, obsessed with magic, have a tradition of casting spells and playing around with talismans at their favorite spot deep in the woods. Not so much anymore.

After a period of tension between the three, Becca and Izzy proceed with their own plan. They visit a local magic shop run by Gilbert (Sam Richardson), a nerd magic enthusiast obsessed with the Sanderson sisters (for reasons I won’t spoil here). He took it upon himself to tell the youngest inhabitants of Salem the stories of their lives. As a gift to Becca, Gilbert gives the boy a charm candle – except that he doesn’t tell them that. When Becca and Izzy lit it at their secret location under the full moon, they, like their predecessors in A trickrevive the witches.

The entrance of the Sandersons – a chaotic sequence of earth splitting, the moon dimming, lightning exploding and of course, a song and dance – let loose Hocus Pocus 2 significantly. The film entered its status as a incident. Winnie, Sarah and Mary are back, and this time they want them both to live forever and become the most powerful witches in the world. The last wish is new; perhaps 30 years of lying dormant makes world domination, a familiar target of the movie’s villains, all the more appealing.

To distract from the sisters’ spiritual upbringing, Becca and Izzy take them to Walgreens, where they promise youth in the form of retinol. In one of the Hocus Pocus 2Best of all, the sisters celebrate in the skincare aisle, taking anti-aging pills and sipping masks. They also encountered a group of fans asking for selfies, showcasing the centuries-old wizards to the power of Instagram filters.

Midler, Parker, and Najimy appear on screen, their chemistry barely changing in the decades between films. Their scenes are always the most interesting Hocus Pocus 2 – those moments where it feels like everyone behind and in front of the camera is mesmerized by them. Two sisters slither down the street through Salem on Halloween night, sarcastic and joking about the quirks of contemporary life with their signature sharp tongues and quick wits. They still crave evil and despise children, but their bite has been lessened by the film’s interest in pacifying them.

Outside of the Sanderson dynamic, Hocus Pocus 2 struggle a little more, though not for lack of effort. There’s an adorable and silly friendship between Gilbert and grown-up Billy Butcherson (Doug Jones) that enlivens the film’s unique potential. But the story of the teenage witch the movie uses is hard to make clear, especially since the latter A trick There is no shortage of such stories, from Halloween Town arrive Sabrina (and restart it). It’s been a struggle to muster the same enthusiasm for Becca, Izzy, and Cassie because their friendship doesn’t have enough screen time to keep us interested. Even as those girls shift to focus, taking up more of the story, the Sanderson sisters are still gems.
