Disney’s ‘Death on the Nile’ has an increasingly scarce release date in China – The Hollywood Reporter
Death on the Nile, Kenneth Branagh’s star-studded sequel for Murder on the Orient Express, has fixed a release date in China. The Disney film and the 20th Century will hit theaters on February 19, more than a week after its domestic release on February 11.
Murder on the Orient Express was reasonably well received and earned $34.6 million in China in the fall of 2017.
Death on the Nile is currently the only US studio confirmed to be released on the upcoming Chinese calendar. Beijing regulators have dramatically curtailed the US film industry’s access to the Chinese market, in response to strained US-China relations and an increasingly nationalist policy stance under Chinese President Xi Jinping. Last year, the number of US studio films released in China fell by a third compared with the pre-pandemic period. Several Disney Marvel mainstays – typically Hollywood’s most popular franchise in China – have been denied release dates in the country, for reasons that have never been officially explained.
Death on the Nile was originally set to hit cinemas globally in 2020, but it has been pushed back several times due to the pandemic.
Like Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile is the film adaptation of the classic novel by Agatha Christie starring famous detective Hercule Poirot played by Branagh. The sequel’s talented cast includes Gal Gadot, Tom Bateman, Letitia Wright, starring Armie Hammer, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, and Jennifer Saunders.
The drama ratings drama unfolds when one of the passengers of the luxury SS Karnak is found murdered. The trailer highlights Branagh’s Poirot and Gadot’s character, Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle. Hammer plays Simon Doyle, Linnet’s husband. Poirot and two glamorous newlyweds are in for more than they bargained for when the trip begins. “When you have money, no one is really your friend,” Linnet tells Poirot in the trailer.
