Distorted Reality – The New York Times

A helpful announcement came out this week in National Review, conservative magazine, was written by Andrew McCarthy, a former prosecutor, who noted that he disagreed with Jackson on many legal issues. McCarthy also wrote that Hawley’s accusations were “unhelpful to the point of pedagogical disregard” and “a libel.” Senator Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, shown that several Trump-nominated candidates have similar records to Jackson in child pornography cases, and Hawley voted to confirm them.

Woke education has become another focus of the hearings, with Republicans like Cruz and Marsha Blackburn try to portray Jackson as its advocate. In fact, she has no opinion on matters that fall into that category. Her only – tenuous – connection with them was serving on the board of the Georgetown Day School, an elite private school in Washington.

That was apparently enough for the Republican National Committee to tweet an image of her this week, with her initials – KBJ – crossed out and replaced with CRT, an acronym for the law. important racial theory. (Much of Republican criticism of Jackson would probably apply to any candidate nominated, regardless of race, but it is hard to imagine same tweet about a white judge.)

The only time Jackson appeared to publicly address the critical race theory was in a 2015 speech. She suggested that it was part of a list of industries that were intellectually relevant to criminal sentencing. practice, including administrative law, philosophy, psychology, and statistics.

To be fair, Republicans are right that many broader issues are legitimate issues of public debate. And for some of them, Republicans can make a credulous case that progressive Democrats are on the left side of public opinion (as Thomas Edsall, a Times Opinion journalist, explains).

For example, most Americans oppose police budget cuts. Many people believe that allowing all transgender girls to compete in women’s sports may not be fair for other girls. Many voters – and not just white voters – think libertarians focus too much on racial identity. Most Americans feel proud of their country and its symbols, including those Some progressives consider racismlike Thanksgiving, the Constitution, the flag, and George Washington.

But in trying to get Jackson to support these views, Republican senators are distorting reality. They are creating a caricature of a Liberal Democrat who bears little resemblance to Jackson.
