Dodge announces new Hurricane I6 barrel engine, Hellephants
Avoid and Mopar have a history of delivering some sweetly boxed engines and show no signs of slowing down. Over the next few years, the engine range is expanding with options for all eight and six cylinders. Right, Hurricane Sixes twin-turbo vehicle introduced on Jeep Wagoneer will make themselves available to use in anything you can fit them in. But Dodge isn’t complete with a V8, because The brand’s ultimate Hellephant engine There will be four variations.
HurriCrate engine
The Hurricane engine, which Dodge calls HurriCrates, is pretty much exactly what you’ll find in these Jeep car, although there is no Jeep. Base one, called Cat 1 (understood?) is the base engine that makes 420 horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque, the same as the base Jeep Hurricane engine. Like all Hurricane engines, it has an aluminum block and head, the rear end of which is a double cam piece. The exhaust pipes are integrated into the head and are liquid cooled. The cooler between both is liquid cooled. Specifically, on the Cat 1 engine, the turbos produce 22 psi of power. The pistons are cast aluminum, and the compression ratio is 10.4:1.
The Cat 3 receives several upgrades over the Cat 1. It features forged aluminum pistons and grounding rings, plus a low-friction coating on the wrist clamp. Upgraded fuel injection system for better fuel economy and mid-cooler coolant the circuit has an additional input. The compression ratio drops to 9.5:1 and the gain goes up to 26 psi. Power estimates are 550 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, both slightly more than the high-output Hurricane engine in Grand Wagoneer L.
There’s even a race-specific storm called Cat X. Details on it are slim, but Dodge estimates more than 1,000 horsepower for it. But the engine probably won’t be street legal.
The first of the HurriCrates to launch will be the Cat 3, due out in the second quarter of next year. Cat 1 will have to wait longer, with an estimate of the first quarter of 2024. Pricing for both engines is yet to be determined. Dodge will also get an updated eight-speed automatic transmission for this engine, the first of which is called the DC1 and is matched with engines that make up to 560 pound-feet of torque. The other is DC2, suitable for motors producing more than 560 pound-feet of torque. That’s important, as these gearboxes will also fit the Hemi V8.
Hellephant engine
You’ll want one of those DC2 gearboxes for any new Hellephant motors. And yes, what was once a wild 426-inch (7.0L) supercharged V8 will be a wild quadruple of supercharged engines. The main difference will be the choice of block aluminum like the Hellephant that we already know. But now there is a cast iron version. The cast iron model has a smaller displacement at 376 cubic inches (6.2L), but it makes up for that with a smaller 3.02-inch turbocharged pulley (3.17 on the aluminum engine) on the 3.0-liter supercharger and a larger 105 mm (compared to 92 mm) throttle body. While sharing the replacement of the Hellcat engine, the Hellephant iron has many improvements to the valve system, connecting rods, bearings and main bearing covers.
The other difference between the engines is the type of fuel on which it is set. The base engines are tuned for high-end pump gas, while the high-output engines are tuned for E85 ethanol. Naming wise, aluminum engines start with “A”, cast iron engines start with “C.” The suffix for each type refers to the fuel based on the alcohol proof number for what each will tolerate. The limit for pump gas is E15, hence 30 proof, and E85 is 170 proof. So you have A30, A170, C30 and C170.
C30 has the lowest capacity of 900 horsepower and C170 reaches 1,000 horsepower. The A30 starts at 1,000 hp and the A170 hits 1,100 hp.
Full specs and pricing are yet to be announced, and like the HurriCrate engine, the rollout is quite lengthy. The A170 will launch first in the second quarter of next year. The C170 will follow in Q3 and the C30 in Q4. The A30 doesn’t launch until the second quarter of 2024. Although pricing hasn’t been announced, we do have the old Hellephant for reference, starting at just under 30,000 dollars. We’re betting that aluminum engines will be similarly priced and cast iron engines will likely be a bit more affordable.
