Dome lights will be off on Sunday night for migratory birds

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – The National Park Service will turn off the Arch Lights on the night of Sunday through May 14 for migratory bird season.

Park services say 40% of the nation’s migratory waterfowl use the Mississippi River Corridor during their spring and fall migrations. Turning off the lights will help birds navigate the Mississippi River safely.

Mary Deuren of the St. “That is very important to me because of our wildlife and keystone species,” says Louis Audubon. “St. Louis is the fifth most dangerous city in terms of bird collisions and bird deaths. ”

Deuren says you can take steps to help the birds.

“Reduce the lighting around your home between midnight and dawn. Use light in the yellow band, not the blue band,” says Deuren.

The light will return at the Arch on Saturday, May 15.
