This comes amid an increase in the number of new cases over the past few weeks.
In a letter dated June 9, Union Health Minister Rajesh Bhushan indicated the average daily number of new cases increased from 2,663 in the week ending June 1, to 4,207 in the week ending June 1. June 8. He also mentioned only 4 states – Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala and Karnataka – reporting 81% of new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Bhushan in his letter also urged countries not to lose sight of their gains in the fight against the pandemic, which has seen cases drop across the country over the past four months.
States and UTs have been required to ensure high levels of testing in clusters reporting high case numbers. The letter also highlighted the genetic sequences of international passengers.
“The fivefold strategy i.e. Trial-Track-Treat-Vaccine and Covid Appropriate Behavior should be followed diligently,” the letter added.
Of the four states that reported the maximum number of cases in the latest spike, Maharashtra’s daily number rose from 536 on May 27 to 2813 on June 9.
Delhi recorded 622 new Covid cases and two more deaths on Thursday, compared with 564 cases a day earlier.
The daily numbers nationwide have also increased significantly over the same period – from 2,710 on May 27 to 7,240 on June 9.
