Don’t make too much noise, but PS5 has outsold the Wii U for a year
Even though it’s only been out for a little over a year, Sony’s PlayStation 5 has already outsold Wii U.
PS5 is sold in 17.3 million units as of December 31, 2021. It launched in November 2020. The Wii U, launched in 2012, has sold 13.56 million as of December 31, 2019.
None of this will be particularly shocking to those tracking the fortunes of both consoles – the Wii U is one of Nintendo’s most notable failures, while the PS5 is selling like a cupcake – but what It’s worth noting that Sony’s machines have surpassed Nintendo (and later some) in just over a year.
However, it is worth noting that 20.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold in the same time frame and PS5 was held back by Chip shortage is happening.
However, we’re not sure anyone at Nintendo will lose sleep over this news. The Wii U isn’t Nintendo’s current system – it’s the Switch, The best-selling console of 2021 in Japan, North America and Europe.
