Download: Google’s AI cuteness overload and America’s fight for gun control

Another month, a flood of weird, wonderful and cute images created by artificial intelligence. In April, OpenAI introduced its new image-generating neural network, DALL-E 2can produce remarkably high resolution images of almost anything it is required to do.

Now, just a few weeks later, Google Brain has revealed its own image-generating AI, called Imagen. And it even outperforms the DALL-E 2: it scores higher on a standard metric that measures the quality of computer-generated images and the images it produces are curated by a team of experts. survey people prefer.

But like OpenAI did with DALL-E, Google is aiming for cuteness. Both companies advertise their tools with a series of photos of anthropomorphized animals doing adorable things: a furry raccoon dressed as a dough chef, a sitting corgi in a sushi house, a teddy bear swims 400m butterflies at the Olympics — and it goes on.

This cuteness hides a dark side of these tools, one that is invisible to the public as it would reveal the ugly truth about how they were made. Read the full story — and see more images created by Imagen — here.
