New MLS club Charlotte FC has the opportunity to add five new players to its roster in Tuesday’s Open Draft.
Charlotte FC has been busy aligning its squad with sporting director Zoran Krneta and new coach Miguel Angel Ramirez scouring the continent – and globally – for squad-building players. They will have the opportunity to add five new names from the pool of 258 players not covered by their MLS teams (see full list below).
In addition to adding players to the roster, Charlotte FC can also take advantage of the draft to obtain assets and cash (allocations) by selecting and then trading players who are on their wishlist. other clubs. Those deals would have to happen after the Expansion Draft, but they’ve happened with greater frequency in the most recent expansion drafts.

How the Draft MLS Expansion Works
Under league rules, five clubs are exempt from exposing their roster to the Open Draft, as they lost players in last year’s edition to Austin FC. Those five clubs are LA Galaxy; Nashville SC; NY Red Bulls; City of Orlando; and the San Jose Earthquake.
The rest of the 22 MLS teams can only defend up to 12 players, revealing the rest can be selected by Charlotte in the Open Draft (complete the rules here).
Charlotte FC can only select a single player from any team’s unprotected list. And any team that has a declared player from their roster will be given $50,000 in general allotment from the league as compensation.
