Driver fell asleep right before driving past the Island Lake Inn

DULUTH, MN – Authorities say a man fell asleep at the wheel shortly before crashing into the Island Lake Inn Wednesday morning.

According to the St. Louis, a 36-year-old man from Tower, was commuting to work in Duluth around 6:50 a.m. when he crashed through a building on Rice Lake Road and into the bar area.

He suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment.

Authorities said there was no sign of impairment and the driver was wearing his seat belt.

The Island Lake Inn was damaged, though authorities have not yet set a price for the repair.

A rep from the Inn said they will be closed on Wednesday while they and community volunteers clean up.

They wrote on Facebook: “We’ll let you know when we’re open for takeout or you’re back to celebrate Independence Day.”

We’ll hear from them, and the community of people who showed up to help, tonight on the 5 and 6 p.m. news.
