Each EV with V2G charger can make $15,000 in 10 years

Each installed two-way EV charger could pay for itself in three years and earn up to $15,000 over 10 years, according to a prediction from one company that supplies such equipment.

The charger is installed for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operation, allowing electric vehicles to discharge electricity back to the grid, at the same upfront cost as conventional chargers. But they also have the potential to make money, Melissa Chan, director of grid solutions and strategic partnerships at Fermata Energy, a technology company that has developed V2G platforms, said in a recent presentation. give CHadeMO Association trade group.

By comparison, a typical DC charger can incur maintenance costs of up to $30,000 over its expected 10-year life, according to Fermata. It highlights how, in the near future, small fleets of vehicles—and ultimately residential users—can leverage this technology to reduce energy and driving costs.

Fermata recently participated in a V2G pilot program with Revel, which operates motorcycle, scooter and carpooling services in New York City. Revel used a fleet of electric cars for the carpool service and installed a Fermata two-way charger at a maintenance and repair depot in the Brooklyn borough of New York for the project.

The project involved three of these chargers and three Nissan Leaf hatchbacks. Under an agreement with local utility company Con Edison, cars discharge electricity from their battery packs back to the grid between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays in the summer — when energy demand is high. volume peaked. Revel makes money from this, but also has the option to unplug the car if needed.

Three chargers can send up to 45 kilowatts of electricity to the grid. According to Fermata, by discharging on Monday-Friday afternoons, this setup can provide up to 3 megawatt-hours of electricity monthly. That is with nightly EV charging as needed.

The experiment shows how attractive a V2G infrastructure can be for fleet operators, but it is not necessarily applicable on a large scale yet. Fermata and Revel already have a favorable deal with Con Edison, but deals with local utilities will vary widely as individual V2G users negotiate with each.

Some progress has been made in enhancing V2G’s viability recently.

Nissan officially approves Fermata’s charger as the first US charger bidirectional charger for leaf earlier in 2022, and California has already begun looking at V2G charging technology on a large scale, grid stabilization. Although a variety of automakers have confirmed future two-way charginga 2020 rumor that Tesla might try to sneak V2G capabilities into Model Y proved wrong, however.
