Eagles lack QB franchise back to bite the 49ers again

Pretty much totals it up.

What was built to be a great clash between the two toughest teams in NFC became a fool before halftime. 49ers can’t get past the first quarter first Eagle before Brock pure left the game with an elbow injury. Josh Johnson filled in to finish the first half before going down with what looked like possible in the third. When Purdy came in for Johnson, and it was clear he couldn’t throw, San Francisco had lost all hope.

San Francisco’s quarterback situation in Sunday’s NFC title game is a microcosm of this season and Kyle Shanahan’s tenure as the Niners head coach. Those are the QB music chairs in the bay area since Shanahan arrived in 2017. As a franchise they have built almost every aspect of the team to an elite level except for the QB location. .

What hurts Niner fans the most is that there is no elite QB. No one has an injury control, but there’s something to it when your QBs are constantly traumatized after trauma. San Francisco had the opportunity to bring Tom Brady to the Bay Area a few years ago and chose to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo. To Jimmy Wood’s credit, he’s played well for the 49ers, but he’s been injured just as often as he was in the second half of this season. Brady, on the other hand, is almost never touched (until recently), which is an upgrade. Besides, Brady still had something in the tank at the time.

No luck in midfield

The 49ers have gone through four QBs this year, starting with Trey Lance, who fell short in Week 2. Garoppolo jumps in and helps The Niners were on the right track before he was eliminated in Week 13. Since then, rookie Brock Purdy has defied the possibility of becoming Mr. Feeling good campaign stories ’22. But Purdy was also not exempt from SF’s injury fault on Sunday, which ultimately turned out to be disastrous.

Shanahan has adopted the philosophy of the QB not being as crucial to the team’s success. It’s been a plug-and-play style system for the 49ers, and it continues to bite them in the ass. Again, you can’t game plan against injuries, but it might be time to move on when the same guys get hurt year after year.

This Niners squad has been built to win for four years, and each time, it comes down to their QB. He either can’t finish the deal or gets hurt no matter who it’s been. They’ve participated in three of the last four NFC championship games and only advanced to the Super Bowl once. And when they made it to the big game a few years ago against Kansas City, Jimmy G’s inability to complete passes late in that game contributed heavily to them squandering a 10-point fourth-quarter lead.

While it was another great year for San Francisco, they’ve fallen short again because of their QB situation. Six years under Shanahan produced one of the NFL’s better running and defending games. But he has to get this team through the tough times at a certain time. Shanahan and general manager John Lynch needed to find a QB that could end a season. The Niners have had the worst collective luck in QB in the entire league over the past few years. A coach can only survive on the top of victory for so long. If something doesn’t change soon, Shanahan could be kicked out.
