Eatonville family shocked to learn someone was buried in mother’s grave


It’s never easy to mourn a lost parent, but one Central Florida family told WESH 2 their grief was made worse by a messy graveyard. heartbroken about the chaos at her mother’s grave in Eatonville. It was something the Cobb family had a hard time accepting. “They deserve each other’s burial. They fell in love,” said Joann Johnson. Leroy and Bennie Lee Cobb have been married for 68 years. He was a pastor and she was a much loved figure in Eatonville. “Because she’s so wise, so loving, and so nice to everyone,” says Patricia Inniss. The Cobbs said that when their father died in 2009, their mother bought two pieces of land at the Eatonville Memorial Gardens cemetery. One piece is for her husband and the other is their mother sadly passed away on New Year’s Day. When the family started the funeral, they were shocked to learn that a body had been buried in Bennie Lee’s grave. Johnson said. The organization currently in charge of the cemetery was able to find a plot of land near their father. Currently, Bennie Lee’s plot lies at the foot of her husband’s grave. “We wanted our mother to be with our father,” said Leetta Cobb Arnold. How did this happen? The nonprofit in charge of the cemetery says it’s centuries old and has changed many times. They believe the company that sold two plots of land to Cobbs in 2009 doesn’t have the legal authority to do so, hoping another family won’t go through what they did.

When they went to bury their mother, they learned that there was a body in her plot.

The three sisters are heartbroken by the chaos at her mother’s grave in Eatonville. That was something the Cobb family had a hard time accepting.

“They deserve to be buried together. They love each other,” said Joann Johnson.

Leroy and Bennie Lee Cobb have been married for 68 years. He was a pastor and she was a much loved figure in Eatonville.

“I was thinking how did something like this happen? Her name is on the stele,” Johnson said.

Leetta Cobb Arnold said: ‘We wanted her to be with dad, not at his feet.
