Edward James Olmos details his battle with throat cancer – The Hollywood Reporter

Edward James Olmos went public for the first time about his battle with throat cancer.

In an interview with Mando Fresko on Mando & Friends shared on Thursday, the actor detailed his recent state of health.

“This will be the first time I’m going to go public and say it, but I have nasopharyngeal cancer,” Olmos said. “I just finished that. December 20th was my last radiation and a week before I finished my chemotherapy.” He noted that he spent “months” on radiation and chemotherapy.

The 76-year-old went on to explain that he still has a bump where the lymph nodes are located: “They burned them away because they shot radiation into the area.” He also recalls doctors telling him that because he was undergoing radiation, they weren’t sure what his voice would sound like after the treatment.

“A lot of my friends have died because of this. It’s a very strong disease,” he said.

Although saying that his battle with cancer “takes a long time”, the actor explained that he is grateful that he is in “conditions to fight this disease”.

“I was in good shape – and I am,” he said. “I swim at least a mile a day, sometimes two miles a day. Every day, seven days a week. And then I rowed and I did weight training. Olmos noted that he lost 55 pounds due to health fears. “I’ve lost all my muscle, so over the last four months I’ve been slowly coming back.”

“There were times for months when I went through treatments that my body gave up on. And I don’t want to get food through my stomach. They wanted to put the tube in and give me nutrients because I couldn’t swallow,” Olmos continued. “They have to put 2,500 calories into my body every day. That’s ridiculous, it’s difficult.” He said he was also given “intravenous fluids” to keep him from becoming dehydrated, as he couldn’t drink water at the time.

“It was an experience that changed me, understanding how wonderful this life is. I’ve had some experiences that brought me close to death but it was close.”
