Effective treatment for menopausal symptoms

Although much has been learned since 2002, many women still needlessly endure menopausal symptoms for fear of using HT.

Video, Hormone Therapy: Understanding the Risks and Benefits, hosted by Dr. Marla Shapiro, past president of NAMS, and featuring insights from Dr. Juliana Kling, chair of Women’s Health, Internal Medicine department at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Twenty years later, women are still asking about the risks of HT,” says Dr. Kling. “Although they are still concerned about heart disease and stroke, their primary concern is breast cancer, although more recent studies have demonstrated that the risks of the hormone are low and far outweighed by the risk of stroke. benefit.”

According to Dr. Kling, there is ample evidence that HT remains the most effective treatment for a wide range of menopausal symptoms, particularly hot flashes and night sweats, two of the most common symptoms. most variable and heaviest.

Furthermore, the associated risk is very low for most women with no contraindications to the hormone and is mainly related to the timing of HT initiation.

“For most women under age 60 or within 10 years of their last menstrual cycle when they start HT, the health risks are very low,” says Dr. Kling, who has like the risk of obesity or a sedentary lifestyle.

“Duration of treatment affects that risk, but that doesn’t mean there is a cut-off point of five years or longer for all women. Also, any potential increased risk associated associated with longer HT duration can often be offset by a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and exercise.”

For example, women whose uteruses need progesterone to protect against endometrial cancer may face a slightly increased risk of breast cancer.

In contrast, women using estrogen alone were found to have a lower risk of breast cancer and a lower mortality rate from breast cancer than women using a placebo.

Dr Stephanie Faubion, NAMS medical director, said: “Unfortunately, a lot of women going through the menopausal transition are needing to suffer because of misrepresentation of data from 20 years ago. .

“It’s important for women to be presented with the benefits and risks on the basis of accurate data and then make the best decisions for their particular situation in collaboration with healthcare professionals. health care. For most healthy women, HT is the best choice for managing disruptive menopausal symptoms.”
