Eileen Gu survived the fall to attend the grand final as Chinese fans cheered
The major aviation event is being held at Shougang Industrial Park, once the site of a Chinese state-owned steel company and the burning heart of Beijing’s industry.
Today, it’s a bustling center for tourism and art exhibitions – and the only snow event venue in the Beijing Olympics area.
The large furnaces and tall chimneys of the old steel mill, built in 1919, are now stamped with the Beijing 2022 logo, surrounded by a frozen lake and brown reeds.
Spectators can also see a pagoda perched on top of a mountain in the distance, overlooking the industrial area.
What is big air? Skiers start from a 60-meter (196-foot) ramp and are scored for the size, style, and difficulty of their jump. Each contestant has three attempts to get the highest score possible.
Since every run is just a jump, skiers will unleash their biggest and best tricks in hopes of winning Olympic glory.
And unlike many mountain events, the stands are close to the action – making room for fans in the front row.
