Elon Musk named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year – The Hollywood Reporter
The world may still be reeling from the coronavirus pandemic but, for 2021’s Person of the Year, Time has chosen someone whose work is dedicated to getting us off this planet.
Magazines and media brands have chosen Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and CEO of electric car maker Tesla and rocket company SpaceX, as Person of the Year.
In a letter explaining to his editor of the decision, Time Editor-in-Chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal wrote: “Person of the Year is an influential figure, and few individuals have it. more influence than Musk on life on Earth, and on extraterrestrial life as well. In 2021, Musk will not only emerge as the richest person in the world, but also perhaps the richest example of major change in our society.”
2021 also marks the expansion of the Person of the Year franchise for Time. In addition to the main honoree, Time also announced Artist of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Hero of the Year Awards. The winners of the year were singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, gymnast Simone Biles of the year, and Hero of the year “Vaccine Scientists and the Miracle of mRNA”.
The announcement came during a video showcase on YouTube on Monday morning. The media has moved its big reveal to the video platform after previously revealing it on network television.
The new categories come as Time has been looking to expand its media presence since being acquired in 2018 by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife, Lynne Benioff. In 2019, Time also expanded its Time 100 list to a full-scale event.
Time has also pushed deeper into video and entertainment content, giving birth to Time Studios, which is moving into kids and families.
