Elon Musk restores reporters’ Twitter accounts after suspension – The Hollywood Reporter

Elon Musk took to Twitter on Friday night to announce that he will reinstate the accounts of many prominent journalists that were suspended from the platform on Thursday.

On December 15, former MSNBC and ESPN host Keith Olbermann, CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan, The New York Times reporter Ryan Mac, Washington Post reporter Drew Harwell, Matt Binder of Mashable, freelance journalist Aaron Rupar and Tony Webster are among those suspended by Twitter.

A few hours after the news broke on Thursday, Musk starts a poll on his account, asking his nearly 122 million followers if he should “unsuspend accounts that doxx my exact location in real time” now or in seven days again. More than 58 percent of the 3.7 million people who voted in the poll said right now, leading to Musk reinstating them.

While it’s not clear why the accounts were suspended in the first place, several journalists criticized Musk and tweeted links to the Mastodon social account that followed Musk’s private jet. “The people have spoken out,” he tweeted on friday. “My position doxx accounts will be suspended for now.” The accounts of Rupar, Mac, Harwell, O’Sullivan, Binder and Webster were reinstated Friday night, but Olbermann’s account remains suspended.

“I want to thank everyone for all the support and kind words over the past day and some changes,” Rupar tweeted. “I was quite upset about the suspension at first but quickly realized that everything would be fine because I am fortunate to have a great online community.”

Webster took a more critical approach to returning to the platform and responding to his last tweet before being suspended, that read“If you’re not willing to admit that Elon Musk lied to you about his ‘free speech’ goals, you’re simply in denial at this point.”

“This is my last tweet before my account was suspended,” tweet on friday read. “Needless to say, I was right. This is not the free speech we promised. Obviously there is no ‘doxing’ – even if an impulsive, unaccountable tycoon says so.
