Fashion Direction for Darren Star’s”Emily in Parisseason three was inspired by Lily CollinsReal life decisions to cut bangs. After seeing her new style, the costume designer Marylin Fitoussi found a whole new series of muses: Audrey Hepburn, Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot, Kate MossAnna Karina in Godard’s classics, and the French New Wave, according to Netflix.

Fitoussi, who consulted with Patricia Field about season 1 and 2, told POPSUGAR that her overall aim was to soften Emily Cooper’s style. She incorporates more subtle pastel tones the way the French do, bidding farewell to Cooper’s bright fuchsia fetish; introduces high-waisted trousers to her wardrobe as a nod to her mentor Sylvie’s (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) confident Parisian style; and exchange high heels for high heels. “Of course, we try to combine high-end brands with budget brands, vintage and young French designers,” she says. “I feel it’s my duty at work to employ young designers.”

Collins was an integral part of the costume conversation, bringing her own creations on set and voicing her opinion. “She might say, ‘You know, Marilyn, I think this print reminds me too much of season one.’ And it was essential for me to listen to her, understand this feeling, assimilate it, and make sure that I can also peacefully offer her many other options,” Fitoussi told Netflix. “My main concern is that she feels comfortable in her clothes… that they really help build her character; that she has to act less, because of intention and mind. status was evident on her through her clothes.”

Another goal for Emily’s style evolution this season? To suggest a reflective effect between her own aesthetic and Sylvie’s. “Emily has been observing Sylvie’s code. She spent two seasons observing her, thinking to herself, ‘She has style, she has her own style,'” Fitoussi said and continued, “Sylvie knows. how to raise her collar, how to put a jacket on her shoulders, I listen, I look, I blend in. And this season, Lily puts a coat over her shoulders and wears a pair of high-waisted pants, which she wears. She’s never worn it before. She’s still not risking what we call ‘Sylvie,’ she can drop her shoulders and pull up her coat and shirt collar. But she’ll get there.”
