Empathy forms the heart of healthcare


The UK’s first and only research center dedicated to giving empathy to the heart of the healthcare industry poses an urgent but reforming need to patient care.

Professor Jeremy Howick will join this first center – Stoneygate Center for Excellence in Mental Health Services, University of Leicester as director this June to enhance patient satisfaction and quality of life through empathetic care.

The Stoneygate Trust is a charity founded in 2007 by Sir Will and Lady Nadine Adderley, to support equal educational opportunity for all (including disadvantaged children and students). Economic).

“People go into medicine because they care about people, but a lot of times their motivation is forgotten due to the need to memorize information for exams and, after qualifying, fill out forms. Medical schools have long recognized the importance of Communication Skills, but this Center will play an important role in breaking down the cognitive divide between good communication and ‘objective’ knowledge ‘ about the human body and what to prescribe them,” says Prof. Howick.

Unlike some harmful side effects of medical interventions, The side effects of empathy are reduced anxiety and improved self-satisfaction in the practitioner’s career.

Training is also planned to include inviting students to experience healthcare first-hand – for example, overnight as a patient – ​​to expand and enhance the use of professional patients. and script-based learning with actors.
