Endangered places on the World Monuments Watch list in 2022

From a British castle threatened by climate change to an Egyptian landmark in the shadow of its more famous counterparts, this year World Monuments Watch highlights 25 cultural heritage sites meaningful but under threat.

World Monument Watch is a project run by the World Monuments Fund, a non-profit organization that aims to highlight globally threatened historical and cultural sites.

Every two years, WMF adds new spots to its watch list, raising awareness and helping to attract funding for the ongoing protection of sites.

To date, the organization says it has directly contributed more than $110 million to projects at more than 300 locations. The World Monuments Fund says the sites also see significant economic benefits from the increased visibility that comes with a spot on the watch list.

Potential new sites can be nominated by individuals and community-led organizations. This year, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) – an organization also on the UNESCO World Heritage List – and an independent group of heritage experts from around the world selected more than 225 nominations before making the 2022 list. .

Maldives’ Koagannu mosques and cemeteries were also included on the list due to climate-related risks, with the World Monuments Fund saying the harmful effects of rising sea levels could be seen locally. this point.

WMF also highlights sites that honor historically underrepresented voices, including the Garcia Prairie in Texas in the United States, the ancestral home of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe, as well as affected sites by what it calls “unbalanced tourism.”

In Egypt, the ancient city of Abydos is noted as a site “infrequently visited by tourists despite its cultural importance.”

And while Mexico’s Teaotihuacan archaeological park is a popular destination, the World Monuments Fund included the site in its 2022 list to highlight just how popular Teaotihuacan is by no means local residents. economic benefits are obtained.

Other points of interest on the list include Beirut’s heritage buildings in an area of the Lebanese city that was damaged by an explosion in 2020. The historic center of Benghazi in Libya – paralyzed due to ongoing conflict – also on this year’s list.

Bénédicte de Montlaur, president and chief executive officer of WMF, said in a statement: “This year’s Watch demonstrates that heritage preservation can offer innovative solutions to contemporary global challenges. “.
