Enes Kanter changes name, becomes US citizen

Boston –

Boston Celtics Center Enes Kanter is changing its name to “Enes Kanter Freedom” to celebrate becoming a US citizen.

Kanter’s manager, Hank Fetic, told the Associated Press that Kanter will have a naturalization oath ceremony Monday afternoon and will also finalize his legal name change.

The news was first reported by Athletic.

Kanter, 29, is a Turkish national who has been an outspoken critic of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğn and the Turkish government. Kanter said his passport was revoked by his hometown in 2017.

A 2011 first-round draft was also posted on social media to support Tibetan independence and criticize China’s treatment of the Uyghurs. During matches, he wore shoes decorated to say “Free Tibet” and protested the boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
