Erin Jackson wins gold in 500m speed skating at the Winter Olympics after teammate gives up position
US speed skater Erin Jackson won the women’s 500 m gold medal at Winter Olympic Games during 37.04 on Sunday.
Jackson nearly missed competing in the 500m at the Olympics after she slipped in qualifying challenges, but teammate and friend Brittany Bowe gave up her own spot to secure a number 1 world could come to Beijing – and it paid off.
According to Team America.
She finished 0.08 seconds ahead of Miho Takagi of Japan in second place and 0.17 seconds ahead of Angelina Golikova of the Russian Olympic Committee in third place.
Jackson told reporters: “I cried immediately, it was just a huge emotional release. So much shock, so much relief and happiness. I still haven’t processed everything, but I feel feel great.”
She added: “I had a bit of a misstep on the back of the chair, but I was just trying, I wouldn’t say recovery, because it’s no big deal, just trying to keep skating.”
