ESPN Taps Spike Lee to Direct Colin Kaepernick Doc Series – The Hollywood Reporter

Spike Lee will team up with Colin Kaepernick for an ESPN documentary on the life of the activist and former NFL quarterback.

Lee will direct and produce the project, which is part of the first deal Kaepernick and his Ra Vision Media signed with ESPN parent company Disney in 2020. Former ESPN host Jemele Hill is also a producer.

The multi-part documentary will feature Kaepernick fully recounting, in first-person, his journey, including growing up as a hybrid of white adoptive parents; soccer star in high school, at the University of Nevada and with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers; and he was eventually released and blackballed from the tournament after he got down on his knees during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality.

Lee will film new interviews and gain access to an extensive and never-before-seen archive of Kaepernick’s to help tell the story.

Kaepernick’s early life became the subject of a Netflix series Colin in black and whiteco-created and executive produced by him with Ava DuVernay.

Lee and ESPN Films previously collaborated on the 2009 documentary film Kobe Doin’ Work, follows Lakers star Kobe Bryant for a single day during the 2007-08 NBA season. Lee is also featured in 30 for 30 installment Winning time: Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks.

ESPN Films will executive produce the untitled series, with Lee producing through his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. The title and release date are yet to be announced.
