Evanston shooting: Father Servandos Hamros was shot dead while playing with his daughter in Eggleston Park, family says

Evanston Police is asking for the public’s help with the investigation and says there is no longer any danger to the public.

Servando Hamros, 29, has two daughters and lives just half a mile from the park where he was shot.

“My son’s daughters have lost their fathers,” said Dawn Hamros, the victim’s mother. “I lost my son… this is just mindless.”

Evanston Police said they responded to reports of shots being fired around 9:05 p.m. at the 2100 block of McCormick Avenue.

Officers who arrived at the scene found a man shot dead in a park along the canal.

Servando Hamros’ family said he was doing a Pokémon challenge with his 7-year-old daughter in Eggleston Park along the North Shore Channel when he got into an argument with at least one other person.

Servando’s family said they saw two people acting inappropriately in the park. His family said Servando confessed his feelings to the two and left.

A short time later, police said an unidentified armed offender shot and killed the father of two children.

His family said at least 14 shots were fired, eight of which hit Servando.

Dawn said: “His daughter witnessed her father being murdered.

Police said his daughter was in the area at the time of the shooting but was not shot or injured. She called for help.

“She Facetimed and said ‘Dad was shot.” She was there alone with her father dying on the ground,” Dawn said.

“I can’t believe it. They’re just playing in the park. They’re catching Pokemons. That’s what they usually do. My daughter can get hurt too. She’s seen everything,” said Lenelly Maya, his wife. Servando said.

Lenelly said she is very proud of how her 7-year-old has handled this confusing situation.

“She called me right away and unfortunately we didn’t make it in time, but she hid and cried for help, she called for help. Someone helped her and who it was, I wanted to say thank you. She was scared,” Lenelly said.

Dawn said she was exercising nearby when she heard gunshots.

“I don’t know at all, I was there and heard that my son was murdered,” she said.

Servando works in the restaurant industry and is excited to start a new job at Culver’s next week. The family is now begging for justice.

“He’s a funny guy,” Dawn said. “He’s great. He loves his daughters. His whole world is his daughters….doesn’t make any sense. These people need to be arrested. this person needs to be brought to justice. They need to be arrested please.” “

His wife said they met in 8th grade at Hayt Elementary, started dating in 2008 as a freshman at Senn High and were “best friends in high school”.

“He’s fun, always smiling, making jokes. He’s just an easy-going guy. Great dad,” Lenelly added. “They took everything from us.”

The police have yet to arrest anyone. Servando is expected to turn 30 next month.
